Negotiating better commission rates with carriers, backed by your own numbers

Rate conversations go differently when you can show persistency, volume and payment accuracy in writing. Here is what to bring.

Bring three numbers to the table

Annualized premium placed with that carrier over the last 12 months, your persistency, and your average policy size. Those three decide whether a rate conversation is even possible, and a carrier will respect them far more than a general claim of loyalty.

Trade something concrete

Rate improvements are usually earned with commitments: a production target, a product mix, or a block of business moved. Decide in advance what you are willing to promise, and what you are not.

Ask for the schedule in writing, with an effective date

A verbal rate is unenforceable and, more practically, will not reach the commission system. Get the amendment, note the effective date, and check the first statement after it lands — new schedules are a leading cause of underpayments precisely because they are new.

Use your audit history as leverage

An agent who can document past discrepancies and their resolution is an agent the carrier knows will notice. That reputation is worth more in a negotiation than any script, and it is the practical reason to keep an audit trail at all.
